A 40-acre dedicated land in Manjakkudi is the zone of innovation and experimentation in organic farming. Apart from 70 types of medicinal plants, the farm has successfully reared 8 vegetable crops, 16 types of trees, and 20 types of cottons, and 40 varieties of artisanal organic heritage rice.
Nel Thiruvizha (Harvest Festival)
This is the 5th year consecutively that the harvest festival is being organised in Manjakkudi. The festival focuses to highlight the importance of reviving traditional agricultural practises, encouraging the younger generation to take up traditional farming practices and spread an awareness of indigenous rice varieties.
Sri P. R. Pandian, Coordination Committee Head of All Farmers Association, Dr. V. Ravi Director of theTamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai, K Mayilvaganan, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Tiruvarur have been a part of the Nel Thiruvizha.
An impact assessment of the Nel Thiruvizha shows that farmers were growing small patches of land to grow organic heritage rice for their personal consumption. They were more receptive to the idea of organic fertiliser and were keen to try it.
